Places & Things: On Location: New England

  • Hollis, New HampshireWaiting for the perfect morning to capture the serenity of this old stand of pine trees I had long admired, it happened one morning in September of 2005 when there was just the right amount of early morning mist. Making a series of exposures as the sun rose, it finally reached just the right angle, spilling light through the trees on the ground cover below.
  • Hollis, New HampshireMill Pond, not far from my home, is the subject of many of my photographs and a place I like to frequent. The trees, in early spring foliage, take on wonderful shades of golden yellow and green in the warm sunlight of this late day shot.
  • Beaver Brook, Hollis, New HampshireYou may not give a second thought to this fern as you walk by (photographed here in Hollis at the Beaver Brook Association). But a closer look reveals the wonderful structure of the leaves, rendered in sharp detail and enhanced by the contrast in lighting.

  • The great colors of these fishing boats, set nicely in a small harbor in Rockport, MA, give one a small taste of New England life by the shore.
  • Arriving at Perkins Cove in the early morning hours, I stumbled across this small marina. The tide being low, allowed part of this dock to rest on land, forming this gentle curve, offset by the white dingy on the right.
  • Setting out from my home, on a bitter cold January morning at 3:30AM, I arrived in Portland Maine 15 minutes after sunrise to photograph this wonderful light house. The warm morning light brings out the great textured surface of the lighthouse tower, which is enveloped in a rich sky that transitions from beautiful shades of orange to deep blue.

  • The combination of the moody sky, linier pattern of the pilings leading my eye across the bay to the houses in the distance as well as the reflections in the water caught my attention. The subdued tones and low clouds give this composition a cold, raw feeling that echoed the actual weather on the day this exposure was made.
  • I watched these horses (Gracie and Toohey) for some time, as they were grazing, when the composition came together. With the horses head to head, old barn in the background and the American flag in the frame just off to the right, this tells a short story of life in rural New Hampshire.
  • While searching for the right composition for this barn and pond, this curious horse began to follow me, grazing along the way. As he wandered into the composition, the setting sun washed his coat in beautiful warm light.
  • While driving through western Massachusetts on a day-long photo trip in the fall of 2005, I almost passed by this wonderful New England scene; an old shed set atop a small hill just above a pond, flanked by an old apple tree.
